A modern barn style home near Canterbury where the owner had already made a good job of the accessible lower weatherboarding himself. We were asked to take on just the difficult high level work to the gable, so the wider exterior project could be brought to a tidy finish.
Project Overview
This modern barn style home in Bossingham, near Canterbury, has timber weatherboarding to its upper elevations. The owner had worked his way around the lower, more accessible boards himself and had made a good job of them, but he was understandably less comfortable working at the height of the gable.
Keen to bring the wider exterior project to completion, he asked us to take on just the part of the work that needed safe access and experience at height. We were able to step in at short notice and finish the remaining high level weatherboarding so the whole exterior could be signed off.

The Challenge
The remaining boards were all at the gable, which is the highest and most awkward part of the elevation to reach. Working comfortably and safely at that height calls for the right access and a steady, methodical approach, which is exactly the kind of work most homeowners would rather hand over.
There was also a good deal going on directly below. The borders had been newly planted, the driveway had recently been finished in resin, and both sat right under the area we would be working on. Getting the high level boards completed without any mess or damage to the new work below was central to the job.
Protecting the Property
Before a single board was touched, time was spent covering and protecting everything below the work. New planting and a freshly finished resin driveway are easy to spoil, and putting them right afterwards is far more trouble than protecting them properly in the first place.

- Plants and shrubs directly below the working area were sheeted over.
- The resin driveway was fully covered to keep it clean and protected.
- Adjacent finished surfaces were protected while work went on overhead.
It is a simple, practical part of the job, but it matters. Careful protection is often the difference between a finished project the owner is happy with and one where the tidying up takes as long as the work itself.
Completing the High Level Work
With safe access set up at the gable, the remaining high level weatherboarding was completed to match the work the owner had already carried out lower down. The aim was for the finished elevation to read as one consistent job, rather than showing where one person had stopped and another had started.
To fit around the owner and keep his project moving, we carried out this work on a Sunday. That suited this particular customer and this particular job; it is not something we offer as standard, but we will always try to be flexible where we can to help a project along.
The Result
With the gable finished, the weatherboarding across the elevation was complete and consistent, and the owner was able to bring his wider exterior project to a close. The planting and the resin driveway came through the work untouched.
It was a modest job, but a satisfying one. The owner got the difficult part taken off his hands at short notice, the finished result ties in neatly with his own work, and the property was left clean and tidy.
