High Level Weatherboard Maintenance, Bossingham

Bossingham, near Canterbury, Kent

This modern barn style home in Bossingham, near Canterbury, has timber weatherboarding to the upper elevations. The owner had already worked his way around the lower, more accessible boards himself and had made a good job of them, but he was understandably less comfortable working at the height of the gable and was keen to bring the overall exterior project to completion.

We were able to step in at relatively short notice and take on just the part of the job that needed safe access and experience at height. Before any work began, the newly planted borders and the resin driveway were carefully covered and protected, and the remaining high level weatherboarding was then completed so that the wider exterior project could be finished neatly.

Weatherboard Repairs and Repainting, Mountfield

Mountfield, East Sussex

The weatherboards on this cottage in Mountfield, East Sussex, had become tired and weathered, and several had deteriorated to the point where local replacement was necessary. There was also an awkward curved section of wall where the guttering had been poorly arranged, with leaking joints, a fall that was not working properly and a run that was not adequately supported around the curve.

Rather than simply painting over the defects, the job was approached as a repair and maintenance project first. The rotten boards were removed and replaced with timber weatherboards matched to the existing profile, while sound boards were retained. The gutter around the curved wall was reworked to improve the fall, with additional support brackets and unions fitted so it followed the profile and was properly supported.

The rear apex and bargeboards were rubbed down, prepared and redecorated along with the other weatherboarded areas, which then received a minimum of two coats of BEDEC Barn Paint in satin white. The finished result refreshed the cottage without changing its character, while the timber repairs and gutter alterations dealt with the maintenance issues that had developed beneath the tired exterior.

Large Weatherboard Restoration, Biddenden

Biddenden, Kent

This large weatherboarded property in Biddenden, Kent, appeared reasonably sound at first glance and came to us as a repair and redecoration project. Once sanding and preparation began, however, substantially more rot was uncovered than anyone had expected, and the job grew into a full timber restoration.

Over 220 linear metres of cladding were replaced in treated shiplap, 22 mm x 150 mm, spliced and integrated so the new work blended into the existing elevations. Every corner cover fillet was renewed, several window beads were replaced and local splice repairs were made where vertical window frames meet the cills.

Leaking gutters had contributed to the decay, so the rainwater goods were cleared, the leaks rectified and everything repainted, with the barge boards repaired and finished as required. Failed chimney render was made good and finished in Dulux Weathershield colour matched to the boards, before the weatherboards were finished in Sadolin Superdec Satin (Moscari Blue) and the trim in a creamy white.

Grade II Listed Oast House, Northiam

Northiam, near Rye, East Sussex

At this Grade II listed oast house near Rye, failing exterior coatings concealed a mixture of sound, loose and decayed timber. We retained and refixed serviceable original boards, renewed failed sections to a matching profile, then carefully prepared and repainted the front and rear elevations, the front and side porches and the outhouse in Sadolin Superdec Satin.

All of the window frames shown were prepared and painted, while the oak doors were prepared and finished in Osmo Clear Varnish. The project demonstrates why weathered boarding should be properly assessed before wholesale replacement is considered.

Grade II Listed Property, The Moor, Hawkhurst

The Moor, Hawkhurst, Kent

The weatherboarding on this handsome Grade II listed period property on The Moor in Hawkhurst was in poor condition throughout, with paint failing across much of the elevation. Several boards had rotted and were replaced to match the existing profile exactly.

A fascia board to the flat roof at the front of the property had also failed and was replaced and matched in seamlessly to the existing detailing. The sash windows were rubbed down and repaired where needed, then given an undercoat and three top coats of Bedec Barn Paint in satin white for a long-lasting, professional finish.

To complete the transformation we painted the black plinth running along the base of the property, right the way around. The result is a crisp, uniform finish that does full justice to this prominent Wealden landmark.

Grade II Listed Property, Bridewell Lane, Tenterden

Bridewell Lane, Tenterden, Kent

This Grade II listed property on Bridewell Lane in Tenterden had weatherboarding with badly flaking, tired paintwork. We thoroughly rubbed down the boards, replaced a couple that had rotted through, and prepared the surface meticulously.

The elevation was then given a full undercoat followed by three top coats of Bedec Barn Paint in satin for a resilient, heritage-appropriate finish. The front door was rubbed down and finished with an undercoat and two top coats to match.

The finished result respects the character of this listed Tenterden property while giving the timber years of protection against the Wealden weather.

Oak Window Frame Restoration, Hawkhurst

Hawkhurst, Kent

The oak window frames at this magnificent Hawkhurst property needed bringing back to life. Solid oak deserves a finish that protects it while letting the natural grain shine, so we rubbed every frame down by hand to a clean, sound surface.

Attention to detail is everything on a job like this. We carefully masked off the brick plinth at the base and protected the flagstones below before a drop of varnish was applied, so the surrounding stonework and brickwork stayed pristine throughout.

Each frame was then given coats of Osmo high-performance clear varnish, leaving a rich, durable, natural finish that will stand up to the weather while showcasing the beauty of the oak.

Weatherboard Cottage Repaint, Cranbrook

Cranbrook, Kent

The weatherboarding on this Cranbrook cottage had started to flake and needed attention before it deteriorated further. The job called for a thorough sand down to a sound surface, taking care to feather back the flaking areas for a smooth finish.

Once fully prepared, the boards were given an undercoat followed by two top coats of Sadolin Superdec, restoring a clean, even, weather-resistant finish that protects the timber and lifts the whole appearance of the cottage.

Weatherboard Cottage Restoration, Fletching

Fletching, East Sussex

This charming period cottage sits in the conservation village of Fletching, deep in the East Sussex countryside. The upper weatherboarded elevation had weathered heavily, with the paintwork flaking and lifting and the timber beneath in need of protection before the next winter set in.

We erected independent scaffolding for safe, full access to the upper elevation, then rubbed the boards down thoroughly, feathering back the flaking areas and repairing the timber where needed. Careful preparation like this is what separates a repaint that lasts from one that fails again within a couple of seasons.

The elevation was then brought back with a full undercoat and top coats for a crisp, uniform white finish that protects the timber and does justice to the cottage’s setting. It is a good example of how far we are happy to travel across Sussex for the right project.

Barn Conversion, The Moor, Hawkhurst

The Moor, Hawkhurst, Kent

This impressive barn conversion on The Moor in Hawkhurst had weatherboarding that was showing its age throughout. The existing dark finish had faded and was failing in patches, with several boards rotten and in need of replacement. It is a large property with multiple elevations, and the scope of the job was substantial.

We replaced the failed boards on a like-for-like profile, filling and preparing meticulously before any paint was applied. Scaffold access was erected around the full height of the gable end and side elevations to allow safe, thorough coverage at every level.

The whole property was then brought back with a rich, dark satin finish — a job that demands clean lines and consistent coverage across a large surface area. The result is a dramatic transformation that does full justice to the character of this Wealden barn conversion.

Angela Cottage, Cranbrook

Cranbrook, Kent

The weatherboarding on this charming Cranbrook cottage had deteriorated to the point where the paint was flaking badly across both storeys. Rather than simply painting over the problem, we stripped the boards right back to bare timber and filled every defect by hand.

With the boards fully prepared and the surface sound, we applied a full undercoat followed by top coats for a clean, even white finish. The blue front door was rubbed down and given fresh coats to match, completing the transformation.

It is a good example of how thorough preparation — the part most people never see — is what makes the difference between a repaint that lasts and one that fails again within a couple of seasons.

Weatherboard House, Ticehurst

Ticehurst, East Sussex

This substantial house in the village of Ticehurst, East Sussex, had weatherboarding on the upper storey that had failed badly. The old paint had flaked away entirely in places, leaving bare, weathered timber exposed above the red-brick ground floor.

We erected full scaffold to give safe, comprehensive access to the upper elevation. The failed boards were stripped, replaced where necessary, and the whole surface prepared thoroughly before undercoat and top coats were applied for a clean, bright white finish that ties in neatly with the brick and chimney below.
