Sympathetic Weatherboard Replacement for Listed & Period Properties

Careful replacement of failed timber weatherboards where repair is no longer practical, matching existing profiles and preserving the character of traditional properties across Kent and East Sussex.

Replacement Only Where Repair Is No Longer Practical

Our first consideration is always whether sound original timber can be retained and repaired. However, where boards have suffered extensive decay, repeated failure or damage beyond practical repair, selective or more extensive replacement may be necessary to protect the building.

We assess the condition of the existing weatherboarding and the likely cause of deterioration before recommending a course of action. Where new boards are required, the profile, width, thickness and detailing are matched as closely as practical so that the work sits naturally within the existing elevation.

Replacement work can range from individual failed boards to larger areas where deterioration is widespread. Suitable timber, fixings, ventilation and finishing systems are selected with the character and construction of the property in mind.

Board Types

The right board type depends on the existing building rather than personal preference alone. Where boards are being replaced, the profile is matched to what is already in place so that the elevation remains consistent and in keeping with the property.

Traditional Featheredge

The classic tapered board, wider at the bottom than the top. The most common style in Kent heritage properties.

Shiplap

Rebated boards that slot together. Provides a flatter appearance and excellent weather protection.

Square Edge

Simple boards overlapping horizontally. Often found on agricultural buildings and barns.

Large Weatherboard Restoration, Biddenden

A large weatherboarded home in Biddenden that looked reasonably sound from the ground. Once sanding and preparation began, far more rot came to light than expected. We replaced over 220 linear metres of failed timber cladding in treated shiplap, renewed every corner cover fillet, carried out joinery and rainwater repairs and a chimney render repair, then finished the whole exterior.
